Position: Construction Laboratory Technician

Are you looking for an opportunity to begin your career with a civil engineering firm learning how to test the quality of building materials being used on job sites? S&ME is currently seeking a full-time Laboratory Technician to join our Construction Services team in the greater Louisville KY-IN area and will be based out of our New Albany, IN office. No prior experience is necessary - we are seeking enthusiastic individuals who are ready to learn and contribute to our team. This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a thriving industry while working alongside seasoned engineers and professionals.


What You Will Do:

  • Perform laboratory sample receipt and processing, compaction testing of soil and document the physical characteristics testing of soil and aggregate in compliance with ASTM, AASHTO, DOT, and/or project specifications
  • Conduct compressive strength testing of soil, rock, concrete and other cementitious material
  • Daily use of Metafield, and/or other field and laboratory information management systems, for detailed recording of testing results
  • Calibration of field and laboratory equipment to industry codes and standards to ensure accurate test results
  • Work collaboratively with a team of experienced engineers and technicians
  • Contribute to a safe and efficient laboratory environment
  • NOTE: While the primary responsibilities of this position are performed in the laboratory, testing and observations on construction sites can be required, based on workload and project needs

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Effective communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing), using the English language
  • Ability to routinely lift 40 to 50 lbs. (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Ability to work and maneuver handheld tools and equipment (such as a loaded wheelbarrow/buckets on uneven ground, power tools, etc).
  • Ability and willingness to prepare for and pass applicable certification examinations such as ACI Strength, NICET Soils, etc.
  • Familiarity with construction materials and processes, a plus
  • Previous construction laboratory experience, a plus
