Job Description:

The Career Development Center has an immediate opening for a Career Advisor. This position is a full-time, 12-month, exempt position, with the opportunity to work a HyFlex schedule during summer months. Given the nature of the position, some occasional evening and weekend work may be required.

The Career Advisor will work with a dynamic, data-driven team to support the full scope of work related to career education and advising. This position is vital to expanding and enhancing the career development support and resources available to assist students in the pursuit of meaningful work and the continuation of successful first destination outcomes, with 99% of graduates working or continuing education within six months of commencement.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The Career Advisor's major responsibilities will be to provide career advising, outreach and presentations in classrooms, event coordination, and communication with employers. Additional responsibilities include:
  • Build rapport with students and alumni while providing career advising to undergraduate students, graduate students, and alumni
  • Facilitate student, faculty, staff, and alumni communication with graduate schools, employers, community organizations, and representatives of professional associations
  • Work collaboratively to expand career advising capacity along with undergraduate student advisors and graduate student advisors
  • Demonstrate excellent public speaking and presentation skills while providing career development presentations to classes and student groups; manage outreach presentation requests
  • Provide leadership in planning and executing career education programming, such as mock interviews, networking dinners, and alumni/employer panels
  • Supervise and develop Career Development Center student staff members as needed in alignment with NACE Career Readiness Competencies
  • Implement appropriate information resources, systems, and technologies to manage contacts and opportunities effectively and efficiently, schedule activities and events, track progress and outcomes, and communicate with internal and external individuals and groups
  • Provide inclusive support for diverse student populations, including pre-professional programs, learning communities, honors students, student-athletes, international students, students with disabilities, commuter students, veteran students, first generation students, students of color, and LGBTQ+ students
  • Teach BU199: Major and Career Exploration and BU299: Internship Preparation and Success courses as needed with additional compensation (master's degree required)
  • Attend key Bellarmine programs and events, including Week of Welcome (orientation) and Commencement
  • Complete all other duties as assigned to support the mission of the Career Development Center, Division of Student Affairs, and Bellarmine University


Requirements:

Bachelor's degree required; master's degree in student affairs, counseling, or other related field preferred
One to two years of experience in the area of career advising, counseling, or student affairs required; one to two years of experience with event planning, presenting/public speaking, working with diverse populations and customer service preferred
Familiarity with career assessments such as PathwayU and the Strong Interest Inventory required

Candidates must also demonstrate the following NACE Career Readiness Competencies:

  1. Critical Thinking: generate new ideas and innovative approaches to advance the mission and vision of the Career Development Center; bring a solution-orientation approach to proactively address problems that may arise
  2. Communication: demonstrate professional writing, targeted writing for your audience, and excel in public speaking and conducting workshops
  3. Teamwork: work well with others from diverse functional areas and backgrounds and look for opportunities to build and expand partnerships across campus and in the community
  4. Equity & Inclusion: advocate for inclusion, equitable practices, justice, and empowerment for historically marginalized communities; solicit and use feedback from multiple cultural perspectives to make inclusive and equity-minded decisions
  5. Technology: able to learn and implement technology platforms, such as Handshake, PathwayU, Big Interview, and Moodle; seek ways that technology can advance the reach of the Career Development Center
  6. Leadership: leverage and build upon the strengths of the team to improve career education and advising; apply interpersonal skills to coach and develop student staff
  7. Professionalism: model the highest levels of professionalism and work ethic within the Career Development Center, Student Affairs Division, campus, and the broader community; demonstrate personal accountability, effective work habits, and learn from mistakes
  8. Career & Self-Development- articulates personal skills, strengths, and knowledge and advocates for strengths-based opportunities for growth. Seeks professional development and continuous learning to advance toward career goals
